Snapdragons

Bold color, bold form—Snapdragons bring vertical interest and nonstop blooms from fall through late spring in Middle Georgia. Spires of dragon-mouth flowers rise above tidy, glossy foliage, adding height and texture that pansies and violas can’t. They shrug off cool nights, love bright days, and keep performing through fickle winter weather.

Choose flats for economical, uniform mass plantings along borders, walkways, and curb-appeal beds; choose 4" pots for fuller plants that establish fast and give instant impact in porch planters, window boxes, and entry accents. Depending on type, plants range from 10–14" (dwarf bedding) to 16–24"+ (garden/tall types), offering easy options for front, mid, or back-of-bed layering.

Light: Full sun to part sun (morning sun + light afternoon shade is ideal in the South)
Soil: Well-drained, enriched with compost
Water: Keep evenly moist—never soggy; water at the base to protect blooms
Feeding: Mix slow-release fertilizer at planting; supplement every 2–3 weeks for continuous spikes
Spacing: 8–10" for dwarf/bedding; 10–14" for garden/tall types
Maintenance: Pinch young plants once to encourage branching; deadhead spent spikes to keep new blooms coming. In late winter, a light trim can refresh plants for a strong spring finish.

Design tips:

• Use dwarfs at the front with pansies/violas; place taller types behind ornamental cabbage & kale or dusty miller for layered, four-season texture.

• Color blends beautifully with alyssum, dianthus, nemesia, ivy, and trailing vinca in mixed planters.

• For showy beds, repeat 2–3 colors in drifts rather than scattering many singles—snapdragon spikes read best in groups.
